- Anne of Green Gables
- "Since its publication in 1908, Anne of Green Gables has been an enduring best seller and arguably Canada's most famous novel. This Norton Critical Edition is based on the first edition, published in 1908 by the L. C. Page Company of Boston, and features the eight original illustrations. In addition, the volume offers an unrivaled selection of biographical, contextual, and critical materials judiciously selected by leading Montgomery scholars Mary Henley Rubio and Elizabeth Waterston." ""Backgrounds" begins with eleven relevant excerpts from Montgomery's juvenilia and journals. It presents the novel's literary context through selections from Sir Walter Scott, Lord Byron, Caroline Oliphant, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Louisa May Alcott, among others. It explores the cultural context through writings by Carole Gerson, Kate Wood, and Mary Henley Rubio." ""Criticism" brings together early reviews and responses as well as modern critical interpretations. The eight early reviews (1908-42) are from Canadian, American, and British sources. The fifteen more-recent essays are by Northrop Frye, Elizabeth R. Epperly, Marah Gubar, Cecily Devereux, Gabriella Ahmansson, Frank Davey, T. D. MacLulich, Virginia Careless, Juliet McMaster, Rosemary Ross Johnston, Elizabeth Waterston, Catherine Sheldrick Ross, Calvin Trillin, Carol Shields, and Margaret Atwood. A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are also included."--BOOK JACKET., L.M. - Working in Women's Archives
- "What Comes to mind when we hear that a friend or colleague is studying unpublished documents in a celebrated author's archive? We might assume that they are reading factual documents or, at the very least, straightforward accounts of the truth about someone or some event. But are they?" "Working in Women's Archives is a collection of essays that poses this question and offers a variety of answers. Any assumption readers may have about the archive as a neutral library space or about the archival document as a simple and pure text is challenged." "In essays discussing celebrated Canadian authors such as Marian Engel and L. M. Montgomery, as well as lesser-known writers such as Constance Kerr Sissons and Marie Rose Smith, Working in Women's Archives persuades us that our research methods must be revised and refined in order to create a scholarly place for a greater variety of archival subjects and to accurately represent them in current feminist and poststructuralist theories."--BOOK JACKET., Introduction / Helen M. - The Island Motif in the Fiction of L.M. Montgomery, Margaret Laurence, Margaret Atwood, and other Canadian Women Novelists
- "Islands, both literal and figurative, recur in fiction authored by many prominent Canadian women writers. Using a critical lens based on Northrop Frye and Julia Kristeva, this book closely examines fourteen novels by eight twentieth-century authors, emphasizing works by L. M. Montgomery, Margaret Laurence, and Margaret Atwood. Several of the novels, such as Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables, Laurence's A Jest of God and The Diviners, Atwood's Surfacing and Bodily Harm, Alice Munro's The Lives of Girls and Women, and Gabrielle Roy's The Tin Flute, are among Canada's most well-known. Some of the works discussed present the island as a redemptive retreat, but in most cases the island's role is ambiguous, ranging from a temporary respite from life's pressures to a nightmarish trap."--BOOK JACKET., 1. Introduction -- 2. Redemptive Retreats: L. M. Montgomery's "Anne Books"; L. M. Montgomery's Jane of Lantern Hill; Marian Engel's Bear -- 3.
