Abstract

A postcard, postdated March 22, 1910, bearing a message in L.M. Montgomery's handwriting addressed to "Mr. Geo. B. MacMillan". George Boyd MacMillan (1881-1953) was a Scottish journalist and writer, and a favourite correspondent of L.M. Montgomery. The two were first introduced, by letter, in 1903, through an American writer who was developing a circle of literary pen friends. Although Montgomery and MacMillan only met briefly in-person, during her 1911 honeymoon in Scotland, their voluminous exchange of letters, postcards, and gifts continued until late 1941, just months before Montgomery's death. PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT: "Yes, Spring is coming here too - but we have had a lovely winter. Am busy with Kilmeny proofs. L.M.M."

Printed message on front reads: "Your ship is coming in / A staunch, seaworthy craft / I've chartered it to send you / A full cargo fore and aft. / Every barrel, box and bale / Captain, mate and all the crew / Each is laden with good wishes / And they're all consigned to you." Cavendish postmark is incomplete, but can be inferred with some confidence as "March 22, 1910"; unusually, there is a faint Halifax postmark on the front of the card that appears to be dated, "March 24, 1910".
